Cleansing & Looking After Your Crystals
Cleaning your crystal is taking care of the physical appearance of your crystal (removing dirt/dust). Extra care will be required for fragile or a water soluble stone such as Selenite, testing on a damaged stone first is advisable before undertaking the cleaning of your favourite crystal.
The process of cleaning a crystal will be different depending on the type of crystal. For tumbled stone and wands a soft dry or damp cloth wiped over its surface will be sufficient. When cleaning a cluster a little more work will be required. Using a soft bristle brush and a little warm water with a mild detergent you can remove dirt that has settled over time between the crystal points. Remember to only use light pressure on fragile clusters. Depending on the crystals’ size and how dirty it is will determine the best method for cleaning. For a small crystal, dipping the crystal into a bowl to first wet and later rinse the crystal after brushing should give good results.
Cleansing your crystal is the removal of the negative or stale energy that the crystal has absorbed and re-charging with new energy. The cleansing can be performed whenever you feel that it is required. This could be as often as every time the crystal is handled or used, for others once a year would be fine.
There are many ways this can be achieved and will come down to your own personal preference that feels best to you. Some people choose to have a long ritual over a period of days or weeks to cleanse the crystal, while for another person this could be a very short couple of seconds. There is no right or wrong way of doing the cleansing. Do what feels good for you, knowing this is the best way to cleanse your crystal, as no one way is more superior. I have included some popular ways of cleansing crystals and if you would like to share your cleansing technique I would love to hear from you.
- Place your crystal on an amethyst cluster for a few minutes and/or store on the amethyst between uses.
- You can place stones under running water while holding the intention (thought) to cleanse them.
- By striking a singing bowl, bell, cymbal or tuning fork near the crystal.
- Pass the crystal through the smoke of incense or smudge stick several times.
- Placing the crystal in the rain.
- Place your crystal under the sun or moonlight for a few hours. Some crystals, especially coloured stones can fade if placed in sunlight.
- Clear Quartz & Carnelian cleanse other stones if placed/stored together.
- Soak crystals in a cup or bowl of sea salt. If sea salt is not available cooking salt can be added to water. Some stones should not be allowed to come in contact with salt due to there metal/mineral content, they include such stones as Pyrite, Opal, Hematite and Lapis Lazuli.
- Cover your crystals in a bowl of dry sea salt or rock salt overnight. Placing stones in or on salt carries the same warning as soaking the crystals in water.
